Use it Or Lose It

Posted by Brian Phillips on

The risks of a sedentary lifestyle are well documented. According to ParticipACTION, being physical inactive on a daily basis can lead to an increased risk of obesity and an increased risk of chronic diseases like diabetes. In fact, according to research by the University of Leicester in England, inactive people are at 147% increased risk of heart attack or stroke, 112% risk of developing diabetes, and 49% increased risk of “premature mortality.” Sedentary behaviour includes sitting at work, vegging out watching television, lounging on the computer or playing video games, and even activities that are mentally stimulating but physically inactive, like reading.

Here at WORLD Hair and Skin, we truly believe in the “use it or lose it” philosophy. We only have one life to live and one body to care for, so why not live life to the maximum? Whether you work a 9-to-5 office job or spend your days exploring the world, we believe there is a way for each and every one of us to lead an active, healthy, and fulfilling lifestyle. Especially in a bustling cosmopolitan city like Toronto, there are resources to keep your body and mind in peak condition, you just need to seek them out. Here are some of our favourite innovations and creative ways to stay active in our fast-paced world:

Stand Up Desk

Picture this typical day: you wake up after too-few-hours sleeping. You sit in your car or on the subway on your way to work. You sit down at your desk for eight hours. You commute back home and sit down for dinner, sit down to watch TV, then lie down and repeat the cycle. Sound familiar? Our addiction to sitting has inspired the alarming catchphrase “sitting is the new smoking.”

We can come up with plenty of ways to increase physical activities in our day-to-day lives, but those eight+ hours in the office chair can act as an imposing roadblock to movement and health.

Enter the stand-up desk. Research from the Mayo Clinic suggests that working at a stand-up desk every day reduces your risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and mortality risk. If you work from home or run your own business, making the change is easy. Otherwise, coordinate with your company’s leadership to make the change on behalf of the health of the employees – and bottom-line of the company.

Bike Lanes

Toronto’s Bikeway Network allows many residents of the city to pedal everywhere they need to go: school, work, shopping, or just getting some exercise. If you live within biking distance of work, take advantage of the bike lanes get to work in the morning. Otherwise, you can make a compromise, like biking from home to the nearest subway station. If you work downtown, get off one subway stop early and walk the rest of the way. Every step counts!

The negative effects of a sedentary lifestyle are alarming and backed up by scientific data. The positive effects of an active lifestyle are just as convincing. Respect your body and it will reward you handsomely in kind. Or, as we’re fond of saying here at WORLD Hair and Skin – use it or lose it!
