You scored between 0 - 10 points - Excellent
0 to 10 points - You get a gold star! It sounds like you have mastered a balance between washing and styling your hair; you are probably educated about the hair and skincare products that you’re using, and their ingredient profiles. We could go as far as to assume that you’re probably quite fit too!
If, however, you’re looking for ideas on how to improve your footprint while maintaining naturally beautiful hair and skin, here’s three insightful tips to help guide you into a more enriched lifestyle:
1. Select products with either natural or organic Ingredients
The difference between "natural" and "organic" products comes down to regulation. The “Certified organic” label identifies products that are heavily regulated, and to qualify, a product’s ingredients must contain absolutely no toxic pesticides, toxic synthetic herbicides, or chemical NPK fertilizers—and, in the case of animal products, no antibiotics or growth hormones. On the flip side, products with ‘natural ingredients” are considered to be anything that is a plant, mineral or animal by-product.
Most certified organic products carry a higher price tag than those of their natural counterparts, but that doesn’t mean that they are better. Botanicals like aloe, chamomile, beeswax, and essential oils are all examples of natural ingredients with a ton of benefits for hair and skin—even when not technically organic.
Do your research, always check ingredient labels, and make sure that products that you’re considering do not have any of these top toxins as outlined by Environmental Defence Canada, https://environmentaldefence.ca/2020/01/09/top-10-chemicals-skincare-products/.
2. Research products with multipurpose functionalities.
Many people don’t realize this, but you don’t need multiple products for every personal care need. We are led to believe that we need a shampoo for oily hair, one for colour-treated hair and another for dry hair. Same goes for skin care products, each skin type is marketed as needing something different. If products are clean, without parabens, phthalates, sulphates, fragrance or colour, the same product can be used on both hair and skin effectively, while stimulating hair and skin health naturally. A “clean” product can be brilliantly efficient and safe for any age, ethnicity, skin or hair type.
If you are looking for natural or organic brands that can be used interchangeably on hair and skin, google “multi-use or multi-purpose” personal care products, see what comes up. There aren’t many on the market, but this is a recent trend so, might as well be ahead of the curve!
3. Look at the ethics behind the manufacturing process, and don’t use products that are tested on animals, Cruelty Free Testing
Successful brands now have to offer much more than a mere designation of organic or natural. There is growing demand for products that are not just healthy but support the social fabric as well as the planet. Before purchasing a brand, so some research. Find out if workers are being exploited in its making, investigate what the manufacturers or retailers are doing to protect the environment. – make sure that the products are being made with a focus on fair trade, social justice, and environmental sustainability.
