While engaged in post-secondary studies, I became very interested in food systems and the socio-economic repercussions of factory farming. I stopped eating meat completely for over a year as a result of this learning and for the latter part of the year, became macro-biotic - a diet of whole grains, beans local veggies and some fruit. Photos of me during this time are remarkable for the clarity of my eyes and skin; I did have less energy and lost weight I probably couldn’t have afforded to lose a subsequent visit to my doctor for a check-up yielded some surprising directives. I was told to start eating meat again - red meat at least two servings per week - and getting a regular amount of dairy back into my diet. I was reminded that I had Thalassemia, a red blood cell deficiency - and at the time was really low in iron.
Reintroducing meat was very difficult. I hated the smell of it cooking and it seemed to sit in my stomach for days, it was like my body didn’t know how to process it anymore. Once acclimated, however, the increase in my energy level was unmistakable, instantaneous and prolonged.
I love the idea of veganism and am committed to embracing it out at some point - I am sure with all the new meatless products on the market, I can get the iron I need. Still, I am careful about the meat I buy, from butchers that supply only humanely treated and non-toxic fed animals. Similarly, veganism and cruelty free meld together perfectly. If you choose not to eat animals, I should think you are as careful about using products that aren’t tested on animals.

Also, this decade’s “Blue Beauty” movement, morphing out of the “Green Beauty” of the nineties, means awareness is shifting to the damage happening to oceans and waterways from plastic waste and ingredients of concern in beauty products. Silicone, micro beads, sunscreen and squalene from sharks are all now under the microscope as the health of our oceans and their inhabitants reach critical levels. With exciting changes coming to WHS packaging and existing Blue Positive ingredient profiles, WHS remains a leader in its ethical treatment of animals, humans and the planet.
